The head of construction at the new Club Med Ixtapa Pacific recently commented that Ixtapa's renovation is "perhaps more difficult than building a whole new resort."

The Controversy of Rubble
Why? He began with the old rooms, pictured here. The construction team literally needed to destroy the room's foundation, the concrete blocks and the moldings to remove them as loads of rubble.
With more than $20 million to transform the resort, those loads of rubble should soon give way to renovated, enlarged rooms, new suites and picturesque common areas. Nestled on Mexico’s Pacific coast, Ixtapa Pacific was the first resort built in the area in 1982 and spans 30 acres of pristine beachfront property.
The resort will open on December 22, 2007 as a premiere vacation spot for young families. Ixtapa Pacific will be the only Club Med in Mexico to offer programs for infants and toddlers.
And don't worry, Club Med promises to transform the rubble to regal.

Personally I am disappointed with the Club Med revamping of Ixtapa (amongst others). I think Club Med management has lost its way. The revamping comes a a high price - TO THE CONSUMER! We have spent 3 wonderful 2 week vacations at Ixtapa over the last 5 years however the revamping will price us (and no doubt many others) out of the market. Based on current prices that same 2 week vacation will cost nearly twice as much (or we could go for just one week) - what a great deal! Looks like Punta Cana is going the same way. I guess the days of a reasonably priced Club Med vacation are over. The higher prices will attract a different type of holiday maker with different expectations - I cannot see some one paying $7000 for his one week vacation for a family of 4 doing 'hands up' round the pool - he will expect full waiter service round the pool. Hence the magic is lost! Well done Club Med.
Club Med fans have often voiced this fear as we renovate our properties. Indeed Club Med's renovations will include more luxury--but Club Med's true luxury and essence is the luxury to be social. Or, as you put it, doing hands up around the pool. This will not disapear. While the starting price point may be higher, Club Med still offers great deals within a moderate price range. Currently the $777 sale is underway (check it out on the corporate website www.clubmed.com. This represents one of Club Med's most competitive price points in recent years and it includes all AMN zone resorts, even Cancun Yucatan. I recommend you try the new Ixtapa Pacific, before you disqualify yourself from enjoying a moderately price, comfortable family vacation at Club Med.
Your response re. the $777 sale is noted however this offer does not work for those with school age children. Also since there is no guarantee that these offers will be available you are forcing the consumer to pay the higher price point or wait and take the chance that an offer may come along that is better. However if it does not then no family vacation. I come back to my main point - why pay more for luxury that is not needed? The accommodations at Ixtapa were in my view just right. No need for luxury if you spend all day in activities and the beach. Maybe the showers could have been improved but the rest was fine. Now you are forcing me to pay for luxury I dont need or want.
I have to agree with "anonymous". I took my children there last winter and was very dissapointed to discover it is completely out of our budget to go again this year. In fact, the cost is almost 3 times as much for the same week.
Club Med still offers great deals. The 777 deal just finished (this is the lowest price point we've had--with the cost as 333 for kids) The Club Med 7-day weekend offer is now running and guest can purchase a 7 day vacation starting from $795. This applies to Turkoise, Carvelle, Buccaneer's Creek, Cancun, Columbus Isle, Punta Cana, Ixtapa, Bora Bora and Sandpiper. Don't write Club Med off because you think you can' afford it. The deals do exist.
You ask for a vote of where Club Med should put it's renovation money!? How about into the BEDS at Punta Cana. It took 3 visits to the chiropractor to fix my neck after we returned - and all the week my husband and I kept thinking our bed was slanted!!!! It sure was. Also, 3 out of 4 our family got sick. Lomotil for all! Nonetheless, the kids had a great time and the food was fantastic. FIX THOSE ROOMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
